What Do You Need to Apply Foil to a Tumbler?
Before you begin, gather your supplies:
- Prepared tumbler
- Your choice of transfer foil

Step 1: Prepare Your Tumbler
Start with a properly prepared tumbler surface.
Your exact preparation method will depend on the products and design technique you’re using. Make sure the surface receiving the adhesive is clean, dry and ready for your foil application.
A smooth, properly prepared surface helps your adhesive apply evenly and gives you greater control over the finished design.

Step 3: Wait for the Adhesive to Become Tacky

Depending on how thickly the adhesive was applied and your working conditions, drying time can vary.
Try the Finger-Pop Test
Here’s the trick we teach our customers:
Lightly touch the adhesive with your finger and lift your finger away.
You should feel your finger stick and then “pop” away from the surface without adhesive transferring onto your finger.
That little POP tells you the adhesive has reached the tack you’re looking for.
If adhesive comes off on your finger, give it more time.
Step 4: Apply Your Transfer Foil
Once your adhesive has reached the proper tack, place your transfer foil over the adhesive.
Make sure you have the foil side positioned toward the adhesive and the carrier sheet facing you.
Press the foil firmly against the adhesive.
Step 5: Rub and Burnish the Foil
Now rub or burnish the foil firmly across the adhesive.
Pay special attention to curves, edges and areas where the foil may not have made complete contact.
The goal is to create good contact between the transfer foil and every area of tacky adhesive underneath it.
Step 6: Release the Foil
Now for the best part!
Lift the carrier sheet away and reveal your transferred foil.
If you notice an area that didn’t transfer completely, don’t panic. Check whether the area still has tack and work additional foil into that spot as appropriate for your project.
And remember:
Apply. Rub. Release.
Once you get the feel for the proper adhesive tack, foiling becomes incredibly easy—and slightly addictive.
